Hello, my name is Fran Reeve.
I am an emerging multidisciplinary visual and performing artist living and working in lutruwita (Tasmania, Australia). I graduated with my Bachelor of Visual Art (hons) in 2022, specialising in soft sculpture through point needle felting. My soft sculpture artworks often depict imagined human faces, I work with concepts of tension, suspense and connection through eye contact.
Since graduating with my BFA with Hons I have begun exploring the art of puppetry and puppet making, as well as other performance disciplines such as circus and dance. I aim to find meeting points for my various disciplines and create object based theatre.
I participated in the STRIDE program with Terrapin Puppet Theatre Company in 2023, and through this 5 week intensive began learning to animate my characters through puppetry.
I have since undertaken the Rosamond McCulloch Studio residency at Cite Internationale Des Arts in Paris, France with the intention of investigating puppetry and object based theatre abroad. This residency was funded by The Mary Maxwell Travel Scholarship in Fine Arts and I was selected by the University of Tasmania.
In 2023 I was selected to be in the RISE exhibition for emerging Tasmanian artists, exhibited at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.
In 2024 my piece entitled 'Long Sustaining (The Crone)' was selected as a finalist for the Tasmanian Woman’s Art Prize. After touring Tasmania this piece was chosen for the People’s Choice Award, presented by Madeline Gordon Gallery and Project Gallery 90.
Over the course of 2024 and continuing into 2025 I have been undertaking contemporary circus company ROOKE's Emerging Artist Program. Through this mentorship I have further developed my performance practice, creating multiple acts and characters suitable for roving and on-stage performances.
I am a resident artist at Kickstart Arts in Newtown, Tasmania and through their Network have taught a series of puppet making workshops for young people during 2024.
